Computer Settings Guide

Use this guide to ensure that your computer has the needed software, plug-ins, and correct settings.

Notes:
1.
Some people use a browser utility to prevent pop-up windows. During the beginning of this training, three pop-up windows display news media relevant to the story. If you are preventing pop-ups you will have to click the news media icons to open these windows; they will not open automatically. The news media icons are located in the bottom left corner of the screen (see display).
2.
The story content of this training is presented through Flash® segments. Depending on your connection, the initial loading time for this training may seem slow; however, once you are into the story, the program's operation will be faster.
 
Step 1:
JavaScript enabled Test

Your browser must have JavaScript enabled in order to use this program.

 

Step 2:
Browser Test

This CD-ROM is designed for Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 5.

 
Step 3:
Real™ Player Test

This training program links to portions of the Emergency Risk Communication CDCynergy product that are presented in the Real™ Player. You must have the Real™ Player to view these videos. Click on the link below to test your computer.

If you can see and hear the video, your player is configured correctly; continue to Step 4.

If you cannot see and hear the video, click on one of the links below to install the player.

NOTE: If you are using Microsoft Windows 95, you will need to download and install Real™ Player 8. RealOne Player will not run under Windows 95.

NOTE: If you choose this option, pay careful attention at the Real™ site to choose the free player as there are several other "for fee" players. The free Real™ Player is not always placed on the Web page in a way that will catch your attention. Generally, the link you should look for is a plain text link and is not at the top of the page. It is not necessary to download the "FREE TRIAL" version or the RealOne™ pay-per-month player.

 
Step 4:
Adobe Acrobat Reader® Test

You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader® to open many of the resource files referred to in this training and located in Emergency Risk Communication CDCynergy. Click on the link below to test your computer. If you are prompted to download a file named "adobe_acrobat_test.pdf" then you do not have the reader installed. Press "cancel" and proceed to download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader®.

If the message "Could not find ColorSpace named CS0" displays, you may have an older version of Adobe Acrobat Reader®. Please install a newer copy by clicking the button above.

 
Step 5:
Macromedia Flash Player Test

You must have Macromedia™ Flash Player 6 or higher to view the interactive portion of this training.

 

Step 6:
Font Setting Test

This setting on your computer may cause some text to appear off screen or disappear. Your computer should be set to display small/regular size fonts. If the text below is completely inside the red box, your computer font setting is okay.

You can adjust your font setting on Windows-based computers by accessing the "Display" window in the "Control Panel."

 
Step 7:
Screen Resolution Test

This setting on your computer may cause the graphics and text to misalign making it hard to read. Your screen resolution must be at least 800 x 600.
