1998 WIST Conference Summary

The 1998 Women in Science and Technology (WIST) Conference was held April 17 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Sponsored by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, this year’s conference was the eighth of these exciting events dedicated to opening doors for high school and college women interested in scientific or technical careers. More than 150 students explored the theme "Success in Science—Maximizing Your Options," by listening to various presentations from women scientists, career development discussion panels, and participating in a Shadow-a-Mentor program. High school and college faculty members also gained valuable information in education technology workshops designed specifically for them. The students and faculty participating in this year’s WIST conference represented institutions of higher education—primarily in the Southeast—and area high schools.
