WIST Conference Opens Doors for University of Washington Graduate
Deepti Babu was attending the University of Washington at Seattle majoring in cell and molecular biology when she saw a poster on campus describing the March 1996 Women in Science and Technology Conference in Oak Ridge. She decided to attend.
The program increased her excitement about her major in science, she said, adding that she "could see myself pursuing that in my future."
During the conference, the audience was taken on a tour of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and thats where Lady Luck tapped Deepti on the shoulder.
"I ran into a job opening as a research assistant in the protein engineering program in the Biology Division," she reports. Deepti accepted the job, and came to Oak Ridge for the year-long position after graduation. She found the job interesting and exciting, and planned to apply for entrance into graduate school after her tenure was complete.
