- Registration, Lunch,
and Welcoming Remarks (College Participants)
These opening activities for the Women in Science and Technology (WIST) conference
will take place at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL's) D.J.
Nelson Auditorium, which is located in Building 1505 of ORNLs Environmental
Sciences Division Complex. Please refer to the directions below. You can also access maps of the Oak Ridge/Knoxville area
from here.
Groups of four or more traveling
more than 50 miles one way in one car/van to attend the conference may request mileage
reimbursement at the rate of $.32 per mile. There is no reimbursement for airfare.
Directions to ORNL's Environmental Sciences
Division Complex Building 1505 (D.J. Nelson Auditorium):
From Bethel Valley Road traveling west from Oak Ridge, turn
left onto First Street at the 3rd traffic light, about 8 miles outside of Oak Ridge. Pass
the entry portal on the left and turn right onto White Oak Avenue. The three-story, tan
brick building located on the right is the ORNL Environmental Sciences Building 1505.
Enter the front of this building, and you will be in the D.J. Nelson Auditorium Lobby.
Parking is available.
Please note ORNL entrance requirements:
- Alcoholic beverages and firearms are prohibited.
- For clearance and security purposes, all U.S. citizens must
submit their full name, including middle name, and bring a form of photo identification
such as a drivers license, school I.D., or passport.
- Noncitizens also need to provide photo identification, such as
a driver's license, and it is suggested that they bring a passport or visa.
- Security requirements prohibit any large carry-on bags
(including backpacks) in ORNL buildings; small purses are acceptable.
- Shadow-A-Mentor
Program (College
Participants)
This program will be held at the ORNL research divisions. Participants will be
bussed from Nelson Auditorium to their destination, and ORNL staff will assist
participants in getting to the appropriate bus. Participants will be bussed back to the
Nelson Auditorium following the Shadow-A-Mentor activities.
- Evening Reception, Dinner,
and Keynote Address (College Participants)
These activities will be held at the Garden Plaza Hotel in Oak Ridge,
215 South Illinois Avenue. Access maps

Friday, March 10
- Registration and Continental Breakfast (High School
Participants, 7:30-8:00 a.m.)
Welcoming Remarks and Keynote Address (High School and College Participants, 8:00
a.m.)
High school conference participants will register and have breakfast from
7:30 to 8:00 a.m. at the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education's (ORISE's) Pollard Auditorium. College
participants should arrive at Pollard by 8:00 a.m. to join the high school participants
for the welcoming remarks and keynote address; college participants will remain at
Pollard for the rest of the day's activities. Access an electronic map to Pollard from here, or

- Hands-On Demonstrations (High School Participants)
Following the keynote address, high school participants will go to the American Museum of Science and Energy
(which is within walking distance of Pollard Auditorium) for the hands-on demonstrations.
Participants will return to Pollard for the roundtable luncheon and the remainder of the
day's activities.
