DOE Science Director Encourages students to give back, look ahead. Department of Energy Science Director, Dr. Ray Orbach, spent an hour with the students during their orientation session at the DOE headquarters building in Washington DC. Orbach summarized his background, referring to the government funding he received throughout his career. When he was tapped as a Presidential appointee to head DOE's Office of Science, Orbach realized this was an opportunity to give back to the American government that had provided so much to him. Orbach encouraged the students to give back throughout their careers, and to seek ways to contribute to the advancement of science. Orbach shared the office of Science's Spring 2002 Occasional Papers, DOE's predictions of cutting edge, highly important, scientific advancements for the next decade. In a brief discussion of each topic, Orbach covered a wide range of scientific disciplines and interests, including dark energy, biotechnology, nanotechnology, national security, science education, and environmental issues. Orbach concluded his visit by answering questions from the students and chatting with them during a break. His enthusiasm for science was infectious. |
