Left: Roland Hirsch from DOE's Office of Biological and Environmental Research welcomes the students to the DOE facilities and provides background about the Nobel Prize and the Annual Meeting of Nobel Laureates in Lindau, Germany.

Left: Dr. Ray Orbach, Director of DOE's Office of Science, talks to the Lindau delegation about the science research programs sponsored by the Department of Energy and about careers in science and technology. He mentioned several areas of DOE research that will be highlights of future programs: nanotechnology, biotechnology, dark energy in the universe, scientific computing, the science and technology workforce, counterterrorism, fusion energy, and environmental management.

Right: Dr. Ron Townsend, Director or the Oak Ridge Institue for Science and Education, welcomes the students and gives them an idea what to expect when they get to Lindau. Oak Ridge Associated Universitites, which manages ORISE, is sponsoring students to attend the Nobel Laureate Meeting.

Left: The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is sponsoring students to be part of the group attending the Lindau meeting. Bill Koch, Deputy Director of NIST's Chemical Science and Technology Laboratory, welcomes students and provides an overview of NIST research programs.
Right: Dr. Hanz-Dieter Lucas from the German Embassy in Washington, D.C., provides information on Germany and what will be seen as the group travels to Lindau. Arrival in Germany is concurrent with the day Germany plays in the finals of the 2002 World Cup and celebrations are expected throughout the country.

Left: Sue Ellen Walbridge, a member of DOE's working committee for the Lindau program, was instrumental in arranging some of the details for the orientation meeting at DOE.
