Thursday's Fourth of July Picnic

Five Laureates and several other dignitaries were guests for a traditional American picnic to celebrate the Fourth of July. In attendance were Laureates Dr. Paul Boyer; Dr. Johann Deisenhofer with his wife Dr. Kirsten Fischer-Lindahl; Dr. Jerome Karle; Sir Harold and Lady Margaret Kroto; and Dr. Rudolf Mössbauer. Also attending the event held at the Eis Cafe Graf were Dr. Anders Bárany, member of the Kuratorium and Secretary of the Nobel Committee for Physics; Dr. Mitio Inokuti of Argonne National Laboratory; Dr. Dennis Patton of the University of Arizona; and Dr. John McClure of DOE. Members of the press who attended were Marion Schmidt of die Spiegel, a major news periodical in Germany, and Madeleine Jacobs of Chemical and Engineering News with her husband Joseph.

The menu, prepared especially for the American delegation by the Eis Cafe Graf, consisted of hamburgers and fixings, barbecued chicken, chips, fruit, and several kinds of homemade ice cream with toppings.
