Introduction

Since 1951, Nobel Laureates in chemistry, physics, and physiology/medicine convene annually in Lindau, Germany, to have open and informal meetings with students and young researchers. Although the meetings typically rotate by discipline each year, this year's event will combine all three disciplines in celebration of the 50th anniversary.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is honored to have been invited to bring a group of its top young researchers to this year's meeting, which is being held June 26-30. The DOE delegation consists of 36 U.S. doctoral students whose current research at their universities is funded by DOE. These students will travel to Lindau to participate in discussions with the Nobel Laureates as well as fellow young researchers from around the world.

The Laureates will lecture on the topic of their choice in the morning and participate in discussions with the students in the afternoons and some evenings.

In addition to this valuable interaction, the participants can enjoy the picturesque island city of Lindau, which is located at the eastern end of Lake Constance, just north of the Swiss Alps. Located at the common border of Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, the medieval city is rich in central European culture.

The program is being administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) for DOE. For more information, contact Priscilla Campbell.
