Application Information

A complete application includes the following:  (Incomplete applications will not be considered.)

  • Application Form:  Application includes a statement of interest essay (maximum of 250 words) describing the applicant's educational and professional goals and what role, if any, participation in the NSAISS will play in achieving those goals.  It is strongly suggested that applicants prepare the statement in a text document prior to filling out the application.

  • Transcripts:  Applicant's prior two years of transcripts including grades earned through the end of Fall 2009 semester.  First and second year graduate students must submit graduate and undergraduate transcripts.  Transcripts must include official university/college markings (i.e., university logo, registrar signature and/or university seal).  Transcripts printed by the student will not be accepted.  Transcripts may be submitted by the institution's registrar's office or by the applicant in either of the two options below:

E-mail:  Scanned copies of transcripts including official university/college markings may be sent via e-mail to NSAISS@orise.orau.gov on or before application deadline.  Scanned copies must have the Social Security Number, Date of Birth, and Student ID Number marked out.  We consider it our serious responsibility to protect applicant's personal information.  Do not submit transcripts containing personally identifiable information (PII) that, if lost or compromised, could cause serious harm (including identify theft) to you.

Postal Mail:  Transcripts must be postmarked on or before deadline.

  • Letters of Recommendation:  Two (2) letters of recommendation from professors or university officials familiar with student's academic performance and career aspirations.  Letters must be on university letterhead and include the name of the applicant and signature of the referee.  It is preferred that these letters be e-mailed directly to NSAISS@orise.orau.gov.

  • Current Résumé:  Send via e-mail to NSAISS@orise.orau.gov

  • Standard Form 86 (SF-86):  This form is required to process the security clearance that students must have to participate in the NSAISS.  The SF-86 Questionnaire for National Security Positions is available on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management website:  http://www.opm.gov/Forms/pdf_fill/sf86.pdf.  The SF-86 MUST be submitted by postal mail, and it must be postmarked on or before the application deadline.  Electronic or faxed copies of the SF-86 will not be accepted.
