How to Apply

So You Want to Apply…

Phase 01 Create an Account

Identify the NETL Research Internship/Fellowship that meets your qualifications. Register for a user account to the NETL online application system at https://netl.orau.gov/.

Phase 02 Create Your Profile

Log onto the NETL online application system.

Read all directions before starting your profile and application

Complete your User Profile before starting the application

Phase 03 Complete the application

Once you have completed all parts of your Profile, click on “Create Application” and select the appropriate program based on your academic level. The information from your Profile will automatically be copied over to your application. The status of your application will initially be “Unsubmitted.”

Review your application to make sure you completed all fields and that all your documents have been attached.

Finally…

Once your application has been submitted, ORISE will review and release it to NETL. You will notice that the status of your application will change to “ORISE Reviewed”

Released applications are entered into an Applicant Pool for all NETL hosts to review. Applications will remain on file for one year.

Phase 1: Create an Account

1. Select from:

  • Professional Internship Program (PIP)- for undergraduate and graduate students and Post Bachelor’s that do not have a recent Master’s or Doctorate degree
  • Postgraduate Research Program (PGRP) -for recent master’s and doctoral recipients
  • Faculty Research Program (FRP) – for full-time faculty (appointments are part-time, sabbatical, and summer)

2. Register for a user account to the NETL online application system at https://netl.orau.gov/.

Phase 2: Create Your Profile

3. Log onto the NETL online application system.

  • Read all directions before starting your profile and application
  • Complete your User Profile before starting the application

Phase 3: Complete the Application

4. Once you have completed all parts of your Profile, click on “Create Application” and select the appropriate program based on your academic level. The information from your Profile will automatically be copied over to your application. The status of your application will initially be “Unsubmitted.”

  • Complete the remaining parts of the application

5. Review your application to make sure you completed all fields and that all your documents have been attached.

  • Click on the Submit Application button
  • Check the box to certify that all your information is correct
  • Sign your name and click "Ok" to submit your application
  • The status of your application will change to "Submitted"

6. Once you submit the application, you will receive an email verifying that your application was submitted. Attached to the email is the reference letter that you will need to send to your referees (you can also access the reference letter from the Application Instructions page).

Phase 4: Application Review Process

7. Once your application has been submitted, ORISE will review and release it to NETL.

  • You will notice that the status of your application will change to “ORISE Reviewed”

8. Released applications are entered into an Applicant Pool for all NETL hosts to review. Applications will remain on file for one year.

Application Considered

9. If the NETL host is interested in your application, your status in the online application will change to “NETL Host Reviewed” (This does not guarantee that you will receive an offer, but it means that a host has requested additional information and is considering offering you an appointment). In most cases, someone from NETL will contact you to discuss the potential opportunity.

Internship/fellowship Offer Extended

10. If you are selected, ORISE will send you an official offer via an email from NETLAdmin@orise.orau.gov with an attached Offer Letter.

  • The email will ask you to accept or decline the offer by logging into the online application system. The details of your offer are contained in the offer letter
  • Your application status will change to “Offer Sent”

11. Read the offer letter carefully.

  • Go to the URL that is included in your letter and download the Terms of Appointment
  • Read the Terms of Appointment carefully

Respond to the Offer

12. Accept (or decline) the offer using the online application system once you have read both the letter and the Terms of Appointment.

  • If you accept the offer, your status will change to “Offer Accepted.” If you decline, your status will change to “Offer Declined”

Prepare for your Appointment

13. Refer back to your offer letter for instructions on paperwork that must be completed in order to finalize your offer.

  • Go to the URL that is included in your letter and download all the required forms
  • Complete the paperwork as instructed in your letter and return to ORISE promptly

14. Contact your mentor for more information about the research you will be doing and to make arrangements for your first day at NETL.
