On Monday, the students experienced
their first substantive look at the Nobel Laureates–the very people
they came to see. Half-hour talks were given by Laureates:
- Professor Richard Schrock of the
U.S.
- Professor Ryoji Noyori of Japan
- Professor Kurt Wüthrich of
Switzerland
- Professor Hartmut Michel of
Germany
- Professor Johann Deisenhofer, of
the U.S.
- Professor Sir John Walker of the
UK
At lunchtime, half of the U.S.
delegation met at the Hotel Stift with a group of German students to
compare notes on chemistry, the meeting and their cultures.
The afternoon gave the students an
opportunity for closer and more personal interaction with the
Laureates as they broke into smaller groups for scientific
discussions, each led by a Laureate. Students could choose to
participate in one or two sessions during the two-hour period.
Monday evening, the meeting hosted a
social gathering for the students. A sumptuous buffet was sponsored
by the City of Lindau and the Lindau Nobel Prize Winners Meeting
Foundation. Laureates were seated at different tables, allowing room
for students to gather around them, share a meal and some
stimulating conversation. After dinner, the entire group (Laureates,
students, and guests) participated in a traditional German Polonaise
mixer. Ladies and gentlemen lined up on either side of the room and
promenade to the middle where they pair off for a waltz. Later, with
a live band in the background, the dancing turned more modern as
students from all countries and cultures enjoyed the fun of moving
to music.
During a break in the dancing, the
U.S. delegation presented the Countess Sonja, patron of the annual
Linda meetings, with a gift of Nambé silver from Santa Fe, New
Mexico. Allison Dennis made the presentation and, in her very best
German, on behalf of the entire U.S. delegation, told the Countess
how much the students appreciated the opportunity to interact with
the Laureates and the international group of graduate students in
this unique forum.
