On Friday, the student delegates began
their trip with an orientation at the U.S. Department of Energy
headquarters in the
Forrestal
Building
on
Independence Ave.
in the heart of
Washington
,
DC
. During this meeting,
the students learned about the missions of their sponsors, the
U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), National Science Foundation
(NSF), and Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU).
Roland Hirsch of the DOE Medical Sciences Division
presented the history of the Nobel Prizes .Don Freeburn of the DOE
Office of Basic Energy Sciences gave an overview of the Office of
Science and Joe Dehmer, Director of the NSF Physics Division
presented an overview of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences
Directorate. Ari
Patrinos, Associate Director of the DOE Office of Biological and
Environmental Research talked about the four leading missions of
that office. Sidney
McNairy, Director of the Research Infrastructure Division of the
National Institutes of Health also addressed the students and
challenged them to make the most of their opportunity in Lindau.
Hirsch finished the program by sharing some information and photos
on
Germany
and Lindau.
After the
orientation meeting, the students went back to the Holiday Inn
Capitol for lunch before boarding buses to the airport for the
overnight flight to
Munich,
Germany.
