Opening Ceremony
June 26, 2005

After a good night’s sleep and adjustment to the six-hour time difference, the delegation boarded buses for the two-hour trip to Lindau.

After arriving on Insel Lindau, the students quickly checked into the Hotel-Garni Brugger and Hotel Mőve, proceeded to the Inselhalle conference hall to pick up their registration materials, and attend the Opening Ceremony for the 55th Meeting of Nobel Laureates and Graduate Students.  Count Bjorn presided over the ceremony representing the Bernadotte family, patrons of the meeting.  Welcome speeches were made by Petra Meier to Bernd-Seidl, mayor of the city of Lindau; Dr. Thomas Goppel of Bavarian Ministry for Science, Research and the Arts; Professor Dr. Frieder Meyer-Krahmer, Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Education and Research; Walter Erdelen of UNESCO, a major funder for foreign student participants; and Professor Dr. Bertil Andersson, Representative of the Nobel Foundation.  A touching interlude was provided by a slide show of the late Lennart Count Bernadotte’s nature photos shown to the accompaniment of Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition."
