On Monday, the scientific program began with Professor Aaron Ciechanover of Israel discussing “Why Proteins Have to Die So We Shall Live.”  This talk was followed by a Roundtable Discussion on the topic of “Evolution of Matter, Universe and Life.”  The panel composed of Laureates Werner Arber, Christian de Duve, Manfred Eigen, John Fenn, Masatoshi Koshiba, Rudolph Marcus, and Martinus Veltman was moderated by Professors Anders Bárány and Burkhard Fricke. Bárány is the deputy director of the Nobel Museum in Stockholm and Fricke is the dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Kassel. Laureate Robert Richardson talked about multi-disciplinary research and Laureate Kurt Wuthrich presented “From Genome to Proteom-Impact on Biological and Biomedical Research.”

For lunch, the U.S. delegation had a joint luncheon with the delegations from Japan, Australia, and New Zealand at the Hotel Stift.
