Friday began with an orientation at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Headquarters, Forrestal Building, in Washington, DC. The 57 students who had arrived over the previous two days finally assembled as an entire group to hear from the organizations that sponsored them.

Don Freeburn of DOE’s Office of Basic Energy Sciences, Judith Sunley, executive officer of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate (MSPD) of the National Science Foundation (NSF), and Wayne Stevenson of Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) each described their respective organization’s missions. Michael Turner, associate director of NSF for the MSPD, gave an entertaining presentation on major questions facing physicists, particularly astrophysicists, in the 21st century. Oliver Schramm, counselor at the Embassy of Germany, gave an engaging informal talk about Germany today. Henry Blount, director of the Office of Multidisciplinary Activities in the MPSD at NSF, served as emcee for the orientation.

After the meeting, the group boarded buses for Philadelphia and Dulles airports for their evening flights to Germany. After some delays for both planes, we were fortunate to land within 30 minutes of each other in Munich. All students and staff made it safe and sound, and with no lost luggage.
