Countess Sonja Bernadotte, president of the committee for the meeting, gave the welcoming address and thanked the sponsors. Federal Minister for Education and Research Edelgard Bulmahn spoke about the great science that will be presented at the meeting and Germany’s initiatives in the field of physics. Also making remarks were Petra Meier to Bernd-Seidl, mayor of the City of Lindau; Thomas Goppel, Bavarian State Minister of Science, Research and the Arts; and Lars Bergström, representative of the Nobel Foundation in Sweden. A final highlight was the induction of the Prime Minister of the state of Baden-Württemberg Erwin Teufel and the President of the Federal Republic of Germany Dr Johannes Rau (in absentia) into the Honorary Senate of the Foundation for the Lindau Meetings.
