Session Objective
The objectives for this session are to:
- Describe components of a successful problem definition.
- Describe how policy analysis tools can help guide solution development.
- Describe a range of advocacy strategies and tactics.
- Describe how bureaucracy affects policy implementation.
- Describe unique evaluation concerns when shaping policy for health.
Session Summary
This four-hour workshop introduces participants to the policy change process, including how a local or state coalition might influence both policy development and implementation. Through interactive exercises, lecture, and group discussion, participants become familiar with concepts and how they might help influence policy. The workshop introduces five topics:
- Defining social/health problems.
- Policy analysis to identify solutions.
- Advocacy to influence the policy process.
- Bureaucratic implementation of an enacted policy.
- Evaluation of policy change.
