Policy Strategies to Lower Sodium Intakes

Session Objective

The objectives for this session are to:

  • Develop a draft outline to implement 1-2 strategies to reduce sodium consumption in their state.
  • Identify barriers and opportunities to gain support for sodium reduction, and to implement strategies.

Session Summary

High blood pressure prevention and control are priorities of CDC’s Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention. Sodium intake raises blood pressure. The policy strategies to lower sodium intake session will cover public health implications, national strategies and policy interventions to reduce sodium intake. In this session, a locality (NYC) leading efforts to reduce sodium in their area and across the nation is presented. Workshop activities include exploring policy strategies, mapping out a plan to action, and identifying barriers and opportunities.
