The objectives for this session are to:
The National Emergency Medical Services Information System (NEMSIS) is a program to standardize the collection of EMS data, establish an EMS information system in every state and territory, and implement a national EMS database. Created by the National Association of State EMS Officers (NASEMSO) in cooperation with the federal government, NEMSIS has been endorsed by all states and territories, professional EMS organizations, and federal and state health agencies including CDC.
NEMSIS provides critical information on 911 cases of acute MI, cardiac arrest, and stroke, on EMS system and personnel performance, and about patient outcomes. As NEMSIS gets implemented nationally, it will become an important vehicle for partnerships between EMS and Public Health to address medically underserved communities and those at high risk of cardiovascular disease.
The workshop provides the participant with information they can use to build productive partnerships in their states between public health and the EMS community to better address disparities in emergency medical care, patient outcomes, and standards of pre-hospital care as they relate to the Coverdell Stroke Registry and CARES (cardiac arrest), and Acute MI STEMI. The session acquaints participants with the emerging suite of data tools being developed for reporting state and national EMS cases. Participants have an opportunity to discuss their data needs with one of the leading NEMSIS developers and provide them important feedback on the EMS data report system.
