Building Capacity for HDSP Program Priorities Addressing Disparities
- Sara McNary, Project Officer, Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, CDC (moderator)
- Lovetta Brown, Director, Office of Health Disparity, Mississippi Department of Health
- Tennille Howard, Director, Cardiovascular Health Program, Mississippi Department of Health
Session Objective
Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to demonstrate in their HDSP work plans how they will address disparity issues through population-based strategies.
Supporting Skills and Knowledge
- Identify disparate populations by geographic region, gender, race/ ethnicity, socio-economic status, or age.
- Document the selection of priority populations from the disparate populations, using burden data that supports their selection.
- Describe the ways in which the State CVH Plan will reflect the needs of the identified priority populations.
- Describe specific system changes that will target the identified priority populations.
Activity
Using a scenario or case study, participants will identify systems to target to most effectively impact identified priority populations.
Session Summary
In the spring of 2005, the Mississippi State Department of Health, in cooperation with the Social Science Research Center of Mississippi State University, initiated a study to assess cardiovascular health disparities in the Mississippi population. The researchers were charged to investigate racial disparities in cardiovascular mortality, behavioral risk, and certain disease knowledge issues. Dr. Lovetta Brown, a principal researcher, will describe this assessment, the results and the implications disparate populations. Tennille Howard will then describe how Mississippi’s Heart Disease and Stroke Program is using this data and the framework for action described in the 2005 Circulation article, “Eliminating Disparities in Cardiovascular Health” to determine program interventions and activities.
