Session Summary
This interactive session will focus on qualitative methods, with particular attention to focus groups as an example of qualitative methods. Many of the materials will be broadly applicable to other evaluation methodologies.
Combining presentation and participation, we will take participants through 5 phases of evaluation:
- Design – including specifying questions, selecting methods, and identifying roles
- Planning – including selecting and recruiting respondents and arranging logistics
- Data collection – including leading focus groups and managing data
- Analysis – including debriefing and coding
- Reporting – including presenting findings and developing action plans
Materials include a summary worksheet/checklist, a list of additional resources, and a sample protocol and focus group guide. The session will be appropriate for participants who expect to conduct this type of evaluation themselves, as well as for those who are more likely to manage or oversee the evaluation work performed by other staff or contractors.
