Objective/Supporting Skills and Knowledge

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Gain an appreciation of the power of advocacy to address public health needs
  • Learn the essential tools for an advocacy campaign, with an emphasis on those components that are appropriate for health departments
  • Learn how to maximize every aspect of an advocacy campaign by integrating the various components through collaboration and good planning
  • Understand how the elements of an advocacy campaign are applied in an actual campaign, using a case study that addressed the needs of stroke patients

Summary

This session will focus on advocacy and the importance of the public/private partnership in advocacy. The Advocacy Power Prism, will be discussed with an emphasis on those aspects of an advocacy campaign that are most relevant to public health officials The concepts of the Power Prism will be applied to New Mexico’s successful campaign for stroke patient care. In addition, there will be an opportunity for questions and answers.
