Projects addressing one of the 6 priority areas: Know Signs and Symptoms, Call 9-1-1

Description

Strike Out Stroke® is a multi-faceted, intergenerational educational campaign designed to raise awareness of stroke signs and symptoms. The campaign was launched in May 2005 for American Stroke Month in partnership with the Nebraska Stroke Foundation. Some of the components of this campaign include:

  • Strike Out Stroke® with the Omaha Royals and the Lincoln Saltdogs. We sponsored a night at the ball fields. The events included educational materials/promotional materials for the crowd, survivor recognition, first pitch thrown by a stroke survivor and the Lt. Governor, as well as media coverage. Campaign signage at Haymarket Park (Lincoln Saltdogs) was displayed for all events taking place at this venue during the season.
  • We piloted similar educational game day sponsorship at the community level during the 2005 summer. We targeted local legion, city leagues, little league and baseball/softball tournaments and games.
  • During the 2006 baseball/softball season we hope to expand the Strike Out Stroke® game day sponsorships to universities and colleges across Nebraska
  • We have developed a stroke educational curriculum for elementary and middle school youth. The Strike Out Stroke® youth learning activities are packaged as a mini-curriculum and include education information about stoke, its risk factors, signs and symptoms of stroke, and the importance of calling 9-1-1 immediately. These activities are designed to help young people understand stroke and take appropriate action when they identify signs and symptoms. Some of the activities get participants up and moving, while others stimulate discussion or offer opportunities for personal reflection. Students can read stories and watch video interviews featuring two teenage Nebraska stroke survivors.
  • A new website has been created for the Strike Out Stroke® campaign. The website includes information on the signs and symptoms of stroke, the stroke educational curriculum, stories from stroke survivors, and a list of Strike Out Stroke® community events across the state.
