Description

Results of a survey of members of five African-American churches in Butler county in rural Alabama indicated that limited access to prescription medications was a problem faced by members and was an ongoing barrier to CVD risk reduction in the area. The question was: “Was there a time during the last 12 months when you needed to fill a prescription, but could not because of the cost?” Partnering with the State Pharmacy Department and Pharmacy Interns and the Department’s Graphics Division, a pamphlet: “Patient Prescription Drug Assistance Programs for Cardiovascular Medications” was produced and distributed in Butler county and later distributed to Senior Centers , 67 Public Health Clinics, Family Physicians, the AARP, and made available to the general public as well.

Purpose and properties of the pamphlet:

  • To help those in need obtain heart, blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol medications at a reduced cost.
  • Provides a list of prescription medications and companies that offer drug assistance programs.
  • Easy to use.
  • Contact information for the pharmaceutical companies is in the form of toll-free phone numbers.
  • Drug assistance program websites are listed.
  • Included is the contact number for the Senior Rx program - a program of the Alabama Department of Senior Services for those age 60 or older.

This pamphlet is available for download on the adph Web site: www.adph.org/CVH
