How to Develop and Use a Logic Model

  • Susan Ladd, MS, Evaluation Support, Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, Northrop Grumman (moderator)
  • Hilary Wall, MPH, Evaluator, Heart Disease and Stroke, Massachusetts Department of Public Health

Objective/Supporting Skills and Knowledge

Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Define terms associated with logic models
  • Describe the basic components of a logic model
  • Construct logical linkages between resources, activities, and outcomes
  • Explain how logic models can be used as a tool for both planning and evaluation

Summary

This session will cover the basics of logic models, including related terms, basic components and steps in the development of logic models using two different approaches: from inputs to outputs and in reverse order from outputs to inputs. An example of how the Massachusetts Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention program developed and used a logic model in their planning and evaluation for a signs and symptoms awareness campaign will be shown. During the session, participants will practice constructing a logic model for a basic task.
