Engaging Partners:  Expanding Reach and Staying on Focus

  • Debra Wigand, Program Director, Cardiovascular Health Program, Maine Cardiovascular Health Program (moderator)
  • Cresha Auck-Foley, MA, Ohio State Health Alliances Director, American Heart Association

Objective/Supporting Skills and Knowledge

Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify potential opportunities and barriers to engaging potential partners
  • Explain how to use the Account Planning concept to guide strategic thinking about partners
  • Identify steps taken in a planning process to facilitate identification of the group’s goals and priorities
  • Describe one technique to engage partners in pursuing new priorities

Summary

This session will highlight partnerships, from identifying potential partners, to the concept of Account Planning and shared agendas, to expanding your program’s reach through partners. The American Heart Association has developed a tool called the Account Plan. This tool is used to facilitate strategic thinking prior to contacting a potential partner. Using a healthcare setting as an example, the presenters will describe the Account Plan and how the concept can be used as an organizational tool prior to meeting with potential partners, as well as on an ongoing basis. Reviewing the effectiveness of the partnership once it is formed will also be addressed in this session.
