Objective/Supporting Skills and Knowledge
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Manage the process of group discussion in a meeting
- Advocate for fair and open procedures during group meetings
- Promote clarity and understanding among all meeting participants
- Help group work more effectively; offer variety of process options; watch time and monitor progress
- Describe processes; promote equity for all meeting participants including those with “high” status, as well as quiet or talkative participants; use techniques that foster equity such as paraphrasing, stacking and tracking, chart-writing
- Promote mutual understanding; encourage thinking and reflection; foster active listening; debrief after events

Summary
This session will use a fun and interactive process to demonstrate the skills needed for effective group or meeting facilitation, and will allow participants to practice the skills they learn. The topics to be covered include: (1) Managing the process of group discussion in a meeting (2) Advocating for fair and open procedures (3) Promoting clarity and understanding among all meeting participants (4) Handling communication flow or verbal contributions (5) Assertive, Passive and Aggressive facilitation styles. Participants will have an opportunity to practice their facilitation skills in a safe environment, where there are no mistakes, and everything that happens is a learning opportunity.
