CDC's Priorities

  • Darwin Labarthe, Acting Director, Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, Associate Director for Cardiovascular Health Policy and Research, NCCDPHP, CDC

Summary

The creation of the new Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention reflects the stated interests of the United States Congress and the Center for Disease Control's national partners to elevate and consolidate the CDC’s prevention efforts to more adequately address our nation’s leading causes of death and disabilities---heart disease and stroke. The Cardiovascular Health Branch is being transitioned into this new division and will serve as the principal focus for cardiovascular health at CDC--charged to provide the public health leadership to improve cardiovascular health for all, reduce the burden of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, and eliminate disparities associated with these diseases. A series of developments--including incorporation of the WISEWOMAN program into the operational organization of this new division are currently being implemented.

During this session, Dr. Labarthe will share these new developments for the cardiovascular health program and discuss the issues, challenges, opportunities and future program direction that will be guided by A Public Health Action Plan to Prevent Heart Disease and Stroke.
