Master's or PhD Thesis Research (special
term/benefit category)
Eligibility
An applicant must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien (PRAs are subject to DOE clearance approval for laboratory entry).
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Be pursuing a degree or career in science, mathematics, engineering, technology, or related fields.
- Have a grade point average of at least 3.0/4.0.
- Have completed coursework of Master’s or Ph.D.
- Be performing Master's or PhD thesis research.
- Enrolled as advanced degree candidate.
Application Deadline

Term
- Master's thesis research: 1 year minimum; 2 years maximum
- PhD thesis research: 1 year minimum; 3 years maximum
Stipend
- $525 per week for Master's thesis research
- $550 per week for PhD thesis research
- $75/week housing allowance (for students whose permanent residence is outside a radius of 60 miles of ORNL)
- Tuition and fees for ORNL research academic credit (offered at the discretion of the research mentor).
- Tuition and fees for advanced academic coursework (offered at the discretion of the research mentor).
Application Information
All of the following must be submitted for the applicant to be considered:
- Completed application form.
- Official transcripts from all colleges attended.
- Two academic references.
- A research plan.
NOTE: If you are selected for an appointment, you will be required to submit an official transcript from your current college or university. Any falsification will render you ineligible for participation and, if found after participation has begun, may require you to reimburse any funds received.
