Student Abstract Submission
Student Day, March 18 at the Renaissance Washington DC Hotel has been announced!
- Winning abstracts will be announced after February 8. ORISE will notify each competitor of award or declination.
- The awarded students will be reimbursed travel expenses to Student Day and the Summit. Travel dates are March 17-20, 2008.
- Awarded students must register for the Summit. A check box is available on the registration for students to indicate they are sponsored by DHS.
- The abstracts selected for student poster presentations will be available under Summit Materials. Attendees have the option to print the material before attending the Summit.

Background
The Science and Technology Directorate’s Office of University Programs (UP) is accepting abstracts to present posters at the summit. All current participants in the following DHS programs/activities are eligible to submit abstracts: Scholars and Fellows Program; Summer Research Team Program; and students from Centers of Excellence (COE), as well as its university partners. Abstracts will go through a selection process. Selected abstracts will determine what posters will be presented. The summit provides opportunities for students to network with the COE research community and DHS staff.
Each submitted abstract must describe the topic to be presented. The topic must be relevant to one of the 16 research areas (PDF) listed below:
- Explosives Detection, Mitigation and Response
- Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences
- Risk and Decision Sciences
- Human Factors
- Chemical Threats and Countermeasures
- Biological Threats & Countermeasures
- Food and Agriculture Security
- Transportation Security
- Border Security
- Immigration Studies
- Maritime and Port Security
- Infrastructure Protection
- Natural Disasters and Related Geophysical Studies
- Emergency Preparedness and Response
- Communications and Interoperability
- Advanced Data Analysis and Visualization
Abstract Guidelines
- Absolutely none of the following will be considered (for publication or display):
- Official Use Only or For Official Use Only
- Unclassified Sensitive Information
- Classified Information
- One abstract per presentation
- Abstracts should be no more than one (1) page
- Abstracts should include names of contributors (list primary student researcher first)
- Abstracts should name the principal investigator from the Center of Excellence (for COE students)
- Abstracts should contain the following subsections:
- Project Scope
- Recent Progress
- Relevance to one (or more) of the 16 research areas listed above
- Publications since the beginning of the project
- Future Plans
Abstract Format
- MS Word file only (MS Word File Template)
- Font: Times New Roman, 12 pt
- Single spaced
- Bold and center title on the page. Leave one blank line between the title and the list of researcher names.
- From left to right, list the names of researchers to be recognized. The primary student researcher should be listed first. Center the names across the page. Do not bold.
- For non-COE students: List the academic institution and the education program you are affiliated with on the following line. Center the institution name and the program affiliation across the page (do not bold). Leave two blank lines between the institution and education program name and the body of the text
- For COE students: List the academic institution and the COE on the following line. Center the institution name and the COE across the page (do not bold). Leave two blank lines between institution and the COE name and the body of the text
- Body of text should be aligned on the left margin
- Do not use headers, footers or pagination
- Figures, tables, etc may be incorporated as long as they are supported by MS Word
- Margins
- Top- 1.5”
- Bottom- 1”
- Left- 1.25”
- Right- 1”
- Save your abstract using the following scheme:
- For non-COE students: Last name of primary student researcher and affiliated education program (Example: Johnson_Scholarship, White_SummerResearch)
- For COE Students: Last name of primary student researcher and COE (Example: Smith_CREATE)
Review Criteria
Reviewers will use the following criteria to evaluate abstracts. DHS will make the final selection.
- Scientific and Educational Merit
- Mission Relevance
- Broader Impact of the Activities
Submission
Submit abstracts to Marolyn Randolph via e-mail at DHSsummit@orise.orau.gov by January 27, 2008. Late submissions will not be considered. Selected abstracts are expected to be announced after February 8, 2008. Please refer back to the Summit Web site for a list of selected abstracts. ORISE will also contact those selected for a poster via e-mail.
