Guidelines for Selecting Hosting Sites and Projects

  1. Familiarize yourself with the hosting sites.

Read the information below about hosting sites offering projects. Click on the hosting site names below for a brief description of the research facility. The description may contain location, housing, on-site transportation, or other information that may be of interest to you.

Below the facility name is the name and contact information of the hosting site internship coordinator, who may be able to answer questions you have regarding the hosting site; local housing availability, cost, or roommates; local transportation; security clearance requirements; internship start and end dates; and other administrative issues specific to that research facility. If you contact the internship coordinator, identify yourself as an applicant to the DHS HS-STEM Summer Internship Program.

  2. Use the project catalog to identify research projects of interest to you.

Read the project descriptions carefully to find projects that best match your research interest and academic background. You may search the catalog for projects by location of the hosting site offering the project, key words, DHS research areas and/or academic disciplines.

In the project catalog, a research mentor (or mentors) is listed for each project. You may contact the research mentor to better assess your interest and to determine if you have the required academic background, skills and/or experience for the project. If you contact the research mentor, identify yourself as an applicant to the DHS HS-STEM Summer Internship Program.

In any conversation with the mentor, keep in mind that the mentor does not have the authority to offer you or guarantee you a DHS-funded summer internship. Only ORISE, on behalf of DHS, can offer you a DHS-funded summer internship through this program.

Mentors will be available to answer questions until the program deadline, January 5, 2012. After this date, you are asked not to contact mentors until you have been notified that you have been selected to participate in the program and have been provided the details of your internship assignment.

Hosting sites and projects will continue to be added to the Web site and project catalog through December 1, 2011. Please check the list of hosting sites and the project catalog weekly for new additions.

  3. Complete the application with the list of hosting sites and projects for which you would like to be considered.

After reviewing the hosting site descriptions and searching the project catalog, list up to three hosting sites of interest to you in order of preference. For each of these hosting sites, list between one and three projects of interest in order of preference. Your preferences will be taken into consideration as ORISE, with input from the hosting sites and the approval of DHS, assigns students to projects. Please know that it may not be possible for all students to be assigned to their first choice of hosting site and/or project.
