Eligibility

Only students meeting the following conditions will be considered:

  • United States (U.S.) citizenship as of the application deadline. (Evidence of U.S. citizenship must be submitted to ORISE at the time appointment is accepted; see Frequently Asked Questions for more information.)
  • At least 18 years of age by May 2, 2016
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher on a 4.00 scale as of Spring/Summer 2015. GPA will be verified at the time appointment is accepted. (See Frequently Asked Questions for more information about documentation required for GPA verification.)
  • Majoring in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) field with interest in homeland security research as described in the DHS Research Areas. Graduate students pursuing DVM, MD, JD degrees are ineligible.
  • Pursuing long-term career goals aligned with the DHS mission and objectives
  • Meet one of the following conditions:
    • Full-time enrollment as a sophomore or junior undergraduate student at a U.S. accredited 2-year or 4-year college or university during Fall of 2015 and planning to be enrolled as an undergraduate student at a 4-year U.S. accredited college or university for Fall 2016.
    • Full-time enrollment as a senior undergraduate student at a U.S. accredited 4-year college or university during Fall of 2015 and planning to be enrolled as a graduate student at a U.S. accredited college or university for Fall 2016.
    • Full-time enrollment as a graduate student at a U.S. accredited college or university during Fall of 2015 and planning to be enrolled as a graduate student for Fall 2016.

Additional Information:

  • Candidates selected for an internship appointment will be required to provide proof of enrollment during Spring 2016.
  • For students enrolled at a 2-year institution during Fall of 2015: Internship assignment is contingent on the student providing proof of application to a 4-year institution by March 1, 2016.
  • For seniors planning to graduate by May 2016: Internship assignment is contingent on the student providing proof of application to an accredited graduate institution by March 1, 2016.
  • Graduate students graduating prior to the expected internship start date are not eligible to participate.
  • Previous participants may apply for a second summer if they meet the conditions listed above.
