EM’s Office of Science & Technology supports the DOE and EM mission by managing and directing a national, solution-oriented science and technology program that provides the foundation, approaches, and technologies that bring about reductions in risk, cost, and schedule for cleanup completion. The Characterization, Monitoring and Sensor Technology program (CMST) within OST develops technologies to satisfy needs identified by the Site Technology Coordination Groups (STCGs), striving to develop technologies that are safer, faster, less costly, more efficacious, and less environmentally invasive than previously used approaches. CMST-sponsored research and development has resulted in the evaluation, development, and application of many characterization, monitoring, and sensor technology solutions to environmental restoration and waste management problems at DOE sites. The CMST program develops technologies to satisfy specific needs identified in Need Statements made by the DOE Site Technology Coordination Groups (STCGs), striving to develop technologies that are safer, faster, less costly, more efficacious, and less environmentally invasive than previously used approaches. The CMST program also develops innovative technologies to solve Site environmental restoration and waste management problems where no suitable technologies previously existed.
