The purpose of the meetings with Nobel Laureates is to give participants the opportunity to talk to Nobel Prize Winners and gain insight into the fields of research. But, the formal meetings at the Inselhalle are not the only opportunities to get together with the laureates.

Tuesday evening, DOE and ORAU sponsored a dinner with the Laureates at the Goldens Lamm in Lindau. Joining the students for dinner were Dr. Brian David Josephson (Nobel Prize, 1973) from Cambridge University in England; Douglas Osheroff (Nobel Prize, 1996) from Stanford, USA; and William (Bill) Phillips (Nobel Prize, 1997) from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, Md., USA.

Later in the evening, Dr. Feinendegen, Vice President of the Committee for the Meeting of Nobel Laureates in Lindau, joined the group. He was interested in ensuring that the participants were having a good experience with the meetings, and was assured that everyone was quite pleased—even excited—about their experience.

Roland Hirsch, DOE Office of Science, acted as host for the evening, and the group was joined by Dr. John McClure, (DOE) and Dr. Wolfgang Wiese from NIST. The presence of Hirsch, McClure, and Wiese offered the group an added perspective on the application of science within U.S. federal agencies.
